CAMPO Transportation Modeling Network
South Central Texas Counties, Texas
Description:
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) selected LAN to provide GIS services to update their transportation modeling network and perform an inventory of existing infrastructure.
The project coordinated data development across the ArcGIS and TransCAD software platforms. This allowed CAMPO to take advantage of the robust database and linear referencing capabilities of ArcGIS while continuing to perform network modeling tasks in TransCAD.
LAN conflated the existing three-county transportation modeling network and traffic serial zones to match the most accurate road centerline data available. Two additional counties were appended to the existing network to create the new five-county network.
LAN implemented a linear referencing system that complied with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standards to allow the maintenance of the real-world locations of roadway features without altering the underlying link-and-node system that is critical for transportation modeling. LAN developed custom GIS tools that allow non-GIS users to easily maintain the linear referencing system measures.
LAN performed an inventory of existing roadway characteristics (such as number of lanes and presence of shoulder), bicycle on-road lanes and off-road paths, and sidewalks that parallel the transportation modeling network to create a multi-modal GIS database for transportation modeling. Features were digitized from orthographic imagery directly into linear event tables using customized ArcGIS tools. Additional custom tools allow staff to easily manage and programmatically update the linear event tables and apply changes in the linear event tables to the underlying transportation modeling networks.
