Phoenix Valley Metro Light Rail Starter System
Phoenix, Arizona
Description:
LAN, with LEO A DALY (LAD), provided architectural and engineering management for the light rail system servicing the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, Arizona. LAN/LAD assembled a team of six architectural firms and six engineering support firms to develop directive and standard drawings and orchestrate the development of site specific platform designs for 28 stations, five bus transit centers, six park and ride facilities, and 20 individual structures for traction power and communications. As part of the program management team of over 50 consultants, LAN/LAD worked closely with Valley Metro Rail to develop platform and canopy configurations that responded to the severe temperatures of the region.
The $1.4 billion system is primarily street-running with embedded tract beginning in North Phoenix. The project garnered the 2006 Transportation Excellence Award, co-sponsored by the FTA, FHWA and APA. LAN/LAD supported the public involvement program where thousands of community residents participating in meetings and web-based voting to ensure that the rail systems, stations, and aesthetics of the entire system would meet the needs of the community.
