Interstate 35 Border Patrol Checkpoint
Laredo, Texas
Description:
LAN developed the prototype design for 11 Texas border checkpoint facilities to replace dangerous, temporary roadside inspection points. The Laredo checkpoint is the first and largest in the program and serves the I-35 "NAFTA" highway corridor.
LAN conducted a design charette with INS programmers and U.S. Border Patrol agents to establish criteria and refine costs. The charette included "on-the-fly" CAD design, digital simulation of facilities, and detailed statements of requirements and cost estimates. The Corps Engineering Manager described the engineering study as "one of the best charettes I have ever experienced."
Subsequently, LAN conducted a Value Engineering Study to analyze potential cost saving features resulting in low maintenance, long life, and operationally efficient border facilities. The LAN team analyzed functionality, alternative materials, refined site layouts, and other factors. Results were approved by the INS and Texas regional authorities. LAN incorporated sustainable design features throughout the facility and qualified the facility to achieve a SPiRiT Silver rating.
