Medical Drive at Fredericksburg Utility Relocation
San Antonio, TX
LAN provided utility relocation design for 3,200 LF of 8- and 12- inch water main, and 2,000 LF of 8- inch sanitary sewer main associated with this high-profile project to lower a major thoroughfare (Medical Drive) under an arterial road (Fredericksburg Road). This location is a critical pathway for emergency vehicles to access the South Texas Medical Center and required significant traffic control coordination.
Significant grade changes and the installation of drill shafts, retaining walls, and bridge abutments required relocation of existing water and sewer lines. Special details were prepared for pipe and valve systems required to accommodate complex phased construction of drill shafts for retaining walls while preserving mandated utility service to nearby medical facilities (in the Medical Center). Owing to the complexity of the installations, dynamic utility network elevation modeling was performed within Geopak, and additional consideration was given to the presence of environmental areas of concern and the presence of asbestos containing pipe. These environmental areas of concern were mitigated during construction and the asbestos pipe was properly removed and disposed of at a hazardous waste landfill.
Designs were coordinated with other utilities, including CPS Energy gas and electric lines and AT&T duct bank and fiber optic. Detailed traffic control plan narratives and schedules were provided to TxDOT to identify the SAWS work items and clarify required sequencing and coordination with other tasks.
